    -Rustdesk direct connect works perfectly from Android to Windows using Tailscale. - Rustdesk direct connect from Windows to an Android phone does not work via Tailscale or LAN, even with input enabled in Accessibility. We have two S24 Ultras with Android 14 and it doesn't work on either. - I installed Phone Link on one of them and that works perfectly when enabled in Accessibility. Phone Link uses the LAN, which is fine for home, but with secure public hotspots, you have no LAN unless you cobble.

    Such a cool video. I adore this shit. I’m gonna build something similar with TrueNAS, gaming PC’s local, remote bare-metal gaming PC, and 3 gaming VMs using a shared Tesla and a dedicated RTX 3060, just for the fun of it and to learn. iPerf is fine for testing, but good luck getting anything remotely close from an UNRAID array unless you carefully lay out the data across all the disks and then query them consistently. Unraid is slow, even with NVMe, for numerous reasons.

    How can I ensure seamless migration of VMs in Proxmox clusters without risking data loss or downtime? Could you make a video on what to do with our Crypto gains if we want to keep them on the blockchain? Maybe put them in RWA projects?

    Yeah..... I'm new to NAS and have been researching between TrueNas and Unraid. Would love to give Unraid a try, but not at their ridiculous pricing structure when theres a free TrueNas option.. Pass on Unraid for me. I'll also die on this hill, curious if many others that are new will as well, would be interesting to see if it eventually leads to a shrinking dying community of users for Unraid.

  • @hamzahlydick5501

    I'd give Unraid a try if the lifetime cost wasn't so much... wish it was a bit more reasonable on price

    what would be nice is if you can have a text file that can be read on the same USB stick to assist in setup whether it's unattended or "I REALLY don't want to bother with these settings so I will set this up and leave it to prompt me about the security questions when it arises" The ease of use can vary from "harder daddy..." all the way to "let's do a survey so my server can better handle me" and with those there can be easier UI designs or even websites saying "hey, you can backup your text file here" because... it would probably only fill a SQL query... OMG I used to just host a lot in SQL because the webhost said "you get 50MB storage... but unlimited SQL"

      Hi! 😊 I think each has a lot of strong points and each also has a lot of trade-offs. I personally use both in a manner that fits those strong points and we are very lucky to have great software that makes things easy. I'm pretty sure the container and VM sections I did not come out with much in the way of praise for TrueNAS. If those aspects are important for a user, that's a major tipping point in favor of UnRaid

    You don’t run into problems with Unraid at 300 drives, you run into it at 30 drives. It doesn’t even see all the drives in my storage server. Pretty pathetic. Had me baffled for a while doing hardware troubleshooting.

  • @ryanmalone2681
    @ryanmalone2681 22 дня назад

    I have both, each running ~150TB of storage. TrueNAS can’t be beat for NAS-only. Shove in 1 TB RAM, get yourself a fast card and switch and forget about it. It’s fast and stable. What else could be more important? What I like about Unraid is that if you lose both parity drives, and then you lose another drive, you only lose that one drive. Same scenario in TrueNAS and you’d lose the array. Container and App Store is good. Things I don’t like, speed and stability primarily, which is kinda poor for a NAS. I’ve found that what’s better than Unraid OR TrueNAS, is an Unraid backup server with a primary NAS as TruNAS inside a VM in Proxmox, only used as a NAS, with VM’s and containers in Proxmox, using TrueNAS as an iSCSI target for fast storage outside of the Proxmox node,and as part of a cluster.

  • @ryanmalone2681
    @ryanmalone2681 22 дня назад

    What’s the point with Unraid? I have 2 servers running 2 x 10GbE each. Even when I was first copying data where all the disks were being used, I saw a max just over 1.5Gbps. Pointless. Unraid is SO SLOW.

    A great presentation and exactly what I am strategizing now for some organizations except on a large scale. A question in the comments triggered an organized thought train that I simply documented for the benefit of others: "Can someone explain why Id use this instead of just a basic remote sharing app like AnyDesk/TeamViewer? Seems completely convoluted for no actual benefit (in this use case of connecting to computer from another location)" Thoughts: - The TeamViewer-like servers broker a connection between two computers as though you were there. This is exactly what you want if you simply want to access your computer at work or provide tech support. - A Hub and Spoke VPN is a direct connection that creates an encrypted tunnel from your computer to the remote network, setting up a route into that network where it may or may not be your exit to the Internet connection. You can use shared directories and read and write to them as though you were there. This enables standard network software, protocols, and procedures between all of the nodes, which obviates the need for any broker servers, which in turn obviates the need for processes to communicate with the broker to be running on each node. Everything just got not cheaper and simpler. You could also use something like RDP to also use a computer on that local network without port forwarding through the remote's firewall. All data flow happens through the hub needs to have a great Internet connection and power to process all of the data. It also means that the packet distance between your computer and one 5 miles away might be 6,000 miles. Thus, it works best for centralized business networks. These tend to have ways built in to ensure that clients are up to date and with good virus protections before enabling connection to the internal network. - A Tailscale/Headscale mesh VPN server creates, brokers, broadcasts, and enables multiple selectable exit points on virtual network segment composed of disparate nodes, which is what the author's use case is. Selectable exit points enables your bank back home to have confidence it is you as well as choosing one where you actually are to give confidence to local businesses. As with Hub and Spoke, this enables standard network software, protocols, and procedures between all of the nodes, which obviates the need for any other broker servers and multiple broker processes running on each node. As with Hub and Spoke, everything just got not cheaper and simpler. Unlike Hub and Spoke, all data flow happens directly between nodes, which means the packet distance between your computer and a guy 5 miles away is the distance to the local ISP and back to him. - Tailscale and Headscale use the same open source client software on the nodes. The Headscale server is an open source implementation of the Tailscale server. Neither server does much work in that they simply communicate control data with the nodes, host their public keys, and broker the connections. However, choosing between them is not as clear cut as one might imagine even when you have the skills. While there are no limitations when deploying Headscale and you might be able to even host it for free, you also inherit the responsibility for updates, monitoring, and security. Tailscale free limits you to 3 users an 100 nodes, but you get other services such as their DERP worldwide network for when you have firewall that doesn't allow UDP on 443 as required by its fast and secure underlying WireGuard protocol, they set up security with your choice of security providers, they provide the redundancy and backups, and they have the capabilities of allowing access to individual nodes from a node that is not part of your Tailnet if you allow them to. Some use the free plan and insist on paying/donating anyway. - In his case, the author has a node in one location watching cameras, another he backs up data to, and on and on. With Tailscale brokering all of the connections, there is no point in him buying another broker plus dirtying up the clients with another process. His overlay network is more secure than being behind a router and NAT because the communication between nodes on the same physical segment are encrypted. Using ARP poisoning trick to stage a MITM attack would be useless because you couldn't read it even if you could intercept it. - You witnessed him installing the RustDesk software. The RustDesk software can be configured to work direct host to host without a connection manager. This gives you some features that you do not get with RDP. HOWEVER, unlike RDP it is not an encrypted connection, so you wouldn't want to use it directly to connect to a public IP. He is using it on his Tailnet where all traffic is encrypted between hosts, local or remote and you don't want to encrypt already encrypted traffic. When you use a RustDesk connection broker server, it requires a secure connection from both client and server, and then brokers a secure connection between them. - Perhaps the biggest advantage of this layout is the mesh VPN lays a flexible, unfettered by distance or separation foundation, that simplifies or makes possible the future deployment of ideas that you are not considering today, which may be largely due to conventional solutions constraining your scope of considerations. Let's say you want to have a public server on the Internet to share that doesn't even have local network address. It has a local network address now. You can set up your own SharePoint. Want the data to be encrypted that you are sharing on that server? No problem, use Cryptomator and share the key with authorized users. You can RDP to it without exposing RDP to the pubic Internet. You have all of this and still have only one connection broker. When you are in a hotel connected to a hotspot you don't have a local network because unlike at home, they isolate connections from each other. With a mesh VPN you have a virtual local network. If you go to the mall with your computer back at the hotel, you are still on the same virtual local VPN with no cooperation from any router required. - Tailscale is very fast because it uses the WireGuard VPN protocol. It even beats my FTPsa server so I'm eliminating them and the required hole in the firewall. So the question that needs to be answered is what do you want to share? If simply using a remote computer as though local, or provide support, you want something like TeamViewer. If you want a virtual local network where you can share services as though local such as mapping drives etc. in addition to using a remote computer as though local, then you want a VPN. If there is no centralized location and you have nodes in disparate and perhaps even mobile locations, you want a mesh VPN.

    Thanks for the well done tutorial! Curious about the long term stability of ZFS on SSDs with a hardware controller RAID 10. I've used Proxmox for many years, in data center environments, all with LVM on spinning disks. (HP DL360 various generations.) Extremely reliable. Now studying the idea of migrating to SSDs and ZFS, but have read a lot about problems- even with the controller in HBA mode. Seems like it works- for a while. Any thoughts on how to achieve long term bulletproof reliability similar to LVM and hard drives?

      I think as long as you are all ZFS you are OK. I would be careful and test this first with a live migration but if that works I would assume it's OK. The HA is based of proxmox's ZFS implementation under the hood which I'd imagine confirms closely to open-zfs standard.

    If you get a crash or power failure, will all the data you think you moved be gone on TruaNAS because of the RAM cache? (you might have said it, but I watched the video in a noisy environment)

    • @DigitalSpaceport
      @DigitalSpaceport Месяц назад

      No the DATA is transmitted in a txg group and committed directly to disk from RAM constantly. The amount "in flight" between ram and disk is limited by default by a setting called SYNC which in its default state, replies to the calling system/application a successful data transmission only when data is at the disk. Only if you explicitly set that to disabled is data in ram in a non disk backed state. You could then have data in flight damaged, but when you restart the machine it looks for the txg group it had last and will continue writing. That is not terrible if your storing say a static file, however it's potentially catastrophic if you are storing a VM or Database. Hence don't disable sync unless you have a very good reason and know the risks... Which now you do.

      You should use the new TrueNAS and it has a very easy to use setup for DMB file shares. The older one most likely has an ACL mismatch if you can't write to the dataset. Hard to troubleshoot that over RUclips comments, but the new workflow in the latest TrueNAS scale makes this much easier.

      One would think but I'm base rate 10c/kWh and so it isn't that bad. I also shed load dynamically via HA and proxmox and don't run all the machines at once very often, unless needed. Usually about 250 total with the house for the electric bill. Cooling is consistently the largest user in the garage.

      I can only envy that per/kWh rate as well. Mine is somewhere around A$0.22. That said still ends up being a lot better value than AWS is at work...

      Not so much but It's a production system in addition to some learning and homelab parts. I keep things kinda segregated in the setup and don't showcase the work stuff really.

    Thanks for sharing the PCIE Settings to get the HBA to work, it works on the ZimaBlade Quadcore.

      Yeah I mentioned to them they need a detailed bios walkthrough guide that's very in depth. A lot of the settings are non-standard they surface to end users.
